Walk Report February 8.
On another chilly, summer morning, 24 walkers assembled beside the oval in the Mt. Clear Recreation Reserve, where we welcomed two new members, Geoff Howard and Leona Ryan.
We were painfully aware of the ongoing search for Samantha Murphy, thought to be missing in the area for four days and all remained vigilant throughout the walk.
After skirting the oval, we passed Mt. Clear College and the Earth Ed Centre, a specialist STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) centre, providing real world experiences for Victorian Students. We then headed through the Woorookarung Regional Park to the start of the new, 750m. section of the Bunny Trail that follows the old Ballarat to Buninyong railway line.
Chris Charleson spoke about the community effort to establish this link, including the very generous donation of an adjoining parcel of land to accommodate a section of the trail. He also commented on the peaceful ambience of the area that features the unusual combination of pine trees with an understory of native grass trees. A place to pause and ponder.
We continued our walk back into the Woorookarung Reserve to the start of the Dementia Trail where we had a snack, then along the Canadian Trail, around the lakes and back to our starting point at the oval, where we were made welcome to Chris’ home, for morning tea.
Chris showed us a framed, aerial view of Ballarat which has been beautifully hand painted. A remarkable and meticulous work. We all greatly appreciated his local knowledge, hospitality and horticultural advice.
Many thanks to Chris and Anne Ottrey for a most interesting and enjoyable walk.
