Guidelines for Bushwalkers

SAFETY PROCEDURES FOR U3A BUSHWALKING 

ALL WALKERS
It is everyone's responsibility to ascertain whether each walk is within their capabilities and not to
undertake a walk that may be beyond their capabilities.

Please read the Bulletin or Blog for walk details especially check the Blog the day prior to a planned walk in case of changes.

On arrival at the meeting place (usually Llanberris Netball Courts Car Park), each walker should go to Janine to have his/her name ticked off. 

EACH walker should have the following on each walk:

 U3A Badge with current details completed
 Strong footwear (not new)
 Climate-appropriate clothing
 Hat
 Sunscreen
 Water
 Food (lunch and snack(s))
 Mobile Phone, turned on, with Leaders number stored
 Crepe bandage or substitute, in case of snake bite
     A whistle is also handy to carry

THE LEADER
The Leader is responsible for the walk preparation (done with a back-up person) and for providing 3
copies of the map of the walk (for the leader, the whip and the archive)

The Leader should also provide written instructions for each car on how to get from the meeting place to the start of the walk (approx. 6 copies).

The Leader should ensure that information about the walk is emailed to Warwick by the first
Monday in the month prior to the walk.

If the meeting place is not Llanberris Netball Courts Car Park, the Leader should ensure that that information is given to Warwick  prior to the walk to be published on Blog.

The Leader should wear an Orange fluoro-vest (provided by the group). This should be returned to
Greg or his deputy at the end of the walk. 

The Leader should carry a Walkie-Talkie (provided by the group), and be always alert for incoming
messages. The Walkie-Talkie should be returned to Greg or his deputy at the end of the walk.

The Leader should ensure that, during the walk, there is a drink stop at least once every 30 minutes.


THE WHIP
The Whip is responsible for assisting the Leader in making appropriate preparation for their walk.

The Whip should wear a lime green fluoro-vest (provided by the group). This should be returned to Greg or his deputy at the end of the walk.

The Whip should carry a Walkie-Talkie (provided by the group), and be always alert for incoming
messages. The Walkie-Talkie should be returned to Greg or his Deputy deputy at the end of the walk.

The Whip should remain the last walker at ALL times.

A First Aid person will be on each walk.

CAR POOLING
Drivers are entitled to an amount of money for the use of their car.

Each walker should have checked the U3A Bulletin or Bushwalking Group Blog for car-pool details and have the correct change for the driver.

DRIVERS

Drivers should ensure they have received a set of instructions for directions to the start of the walk.

Drivers should ensure they have the mobile phone numbers of the leader of the walk.

Passengers should ensure they give the stated car pool money to their driver.

ON THE WALK
IT IS EVERYBODY'S RESPONSIBILITY to remain behind the leader and in front of the whip, both of whom will be wearing fluoro-vests.

It is each walker's responsibility to ensure that the person following is able to see him/her.

People who know they walk slowly should walk at the front or in the middle of the group.

If you feel unwell, please let the nearest person know.

The group will have 2 Walkie-Talkies – carried by the leader, and the whip.

Toilet Stops - Walkers in need of a toilet stop should tell the nearest walker before leaving the track.
