Bunny Line Walk Report February 27
Thursday began as a fairly cool day, with a brisk breeze, but it turned into a perfect day for walking. 31 people arrived for a most interesting walk led by Anne and Libby and we were very pleased to welcome new walkers, Els and Carole, to the group. The walk took in part of the Bunny Line which originally opened in 1889 and extended from Ballarat to Buninyong. Passenger services ceased in 1930, the section from Eureka to Buninyong was closed in 1947, leaving the short branch to Eureka which closed in 1986.
Anne took us to some noteworthy locations, beginning with the railway turntable in Ballarat East. From there we retraced the railway route under Victoria St to the Museum of Australian Democracy at Eureka, seeing remnants of the rails and train wheels as we went. Anne’s accounts of the railway added so much of interest to the walk.
After a morning tea break beside a railway culvert, we returned to the cars and thereafter to Little Square Garage cafe for coffee.
Many thanks to Anne and Libby for a very enjoyable and informative walk.
Thanks also to Maria for her photos.
